Long Island Children’s Theatre Round-Up: August

A morning or afternoon in the theatre can be a cool and cultural escape in the August heat or on rainy days. Fortunately, there are a great variety of productions playing this month!

“Pinocchio” at Theatre Three

Theatre Three presents its original musical re-telling of the puppet that dreams of becoming a real boy. Pinocchio will soon find out the challenges of being truly human. Come follow Pinocchio as he journey’s down the road of misadventure and learns the importance of telling the truth.

“The Lion King Experience Jr.” CM Performing Arts Center

Disney’s “The Lion King” has captivated the imagination of audiences around the world and now, the African savannah comes to life on stage with Simba, Rafiki and an unforgettable cast of characters as they journey from Pride Rock to the jungle… and back again, in this inspiring, coming-of-age tale.

“Frozen Jr.” at The Gateway

Based on the 2018 Broadway musical, Frozen brings Elsa, Anna, and the magical land of Arendelle to life, onstage. The show features all of the memorable songs from the animated film, and will thrill young and old alike.

“Mouse on the Move” at the Long Island Children’s Museum

By Kathryn Chase Bryer and Janet Stanford. Two adventurous mice are ready to explore the world beyond their little mouse-hole. They decide to go to the moon because they believe it is made entirely of delicious, mouth-watering cheese. The pair learns to be resourceful, creative, and brave as they discover a beautiful garden, navigate uncharted waters, and travel through space in search of cheese. Created especially for young audience members, this multi-sensory and fantastically physical experience offers a wonderful introduction to the world of theater. In this interactive piece, audience members become active in the storytelling as they use props and their imagination to help the mice. Presented with permission of Plays for Young Audiences, A partnership of Seattle Children’s Theatre and Children’s Theatre Company-Minneapolis.

“Rapunzel” at the John W. Engeman Theater

Forced to live alone in a tower with nothing but her hair and her witch (literally) of a “mother”, Rapunzel’s sixteenth birthday has come – meaning she’ll be able to see the outside world for the first time, just as her “mother” promised. Scared to let her go, though, the witch reneges. Lucky for Rapunzel a young prince, named Brian, happens across her tower and calls out her as he’s seen the witch do: “Rapunzel! Rapunzel! Let down your hair!” Before the Prince and Rapunzel have their inevitable “happily ever after,” though, they’re going to have to face the wrath of the witch and few other hilarious obstacles.
